Aim: This study explored students' motivations during their participation in the "Street Games Academy" after-school program activities. Theory: Deci and Ryan’s self-determination theory for motivation and self-determination in human behavior builds this study’s theoretical framework. It is a valuable tool for exploring students’ intrinsic and extrinsic motivation during their participation in the after-school program. It aided in constructing this study’s interview questions and making sense of collected interview data on the study topic. Method: This study used qualitative semi-structured interviews as a method of data collection using the purposive sampling method with Street Games Academy after-school program’s students in Gothenburg, Trollhättan, and Vänersborg. The study used a deductive thematic analysis approach for transcribing, coding, and classifying the collected data. Results: This study’s results revealed that students have both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to participate in the Street Games Academy after-school program. Students showed more intrinsic motivation than extrinsic motivation as they showed more sense of relation toward their friends. Also, students’ motivation has changed during their participation in the program as they claimed that their extrinsic reasons for joining the program have changed to intrinsic ones.en
