| dc.description.abstract | In this study in media history, we examine The Fifth Sahlgrenska as a medical media system located in the so-called hospital city in Änggården in Gothenburg. The study focuses on the period 1933–1959, which was called The Fifth Sahlgrenska (Det femte Sahlgrenska) in its own time. The purpose is to track and describe the uses of The Fifth Sahlgrenska as a medical media system, but also the uses of its media forms and its intermedial events and occurrences. Dealing with various media forms, like film, photo, sciopticon image, text label, wire recording and X-ray image, the study examines the production of images and narratives in and by means of them. The study also deals with their intermedial connections in displays, inaugurations, lectures and printed works in the Sahlgrenska Hospital Museum, the Sahlgrenska Hospital Surgery Clinic, the Office of the Hospitals Board, and the King Gustaf V’s Jubilee Clinic. Important actors in this mid-twentieth century medical media system were the museum founder and nurse Ingeborg Kastman (1901–1995), the hospital director and municipal politician Hugo Höglund (1889–1975) and the chief physician and professor of surgery Sven Johansson (1880–1959). How did they use the media system and its various media forms, and how did they join together media forms into intermedial displays, lectures and printed works, in order to produce images and narratives about the historical advancements in medicine and hospital care leading up to the good and rational patient care, institutional management and medical treatment of The Fifth Sahlgrenska?
