Reading space. Möbel för läsning till Göteborgs nya stadsbibliotek
Abstract
Reading space
Furniture for reading for the new city library of Göteborg
The main purpose of my project has been to inspire people to read books at the library. I wanted to create something very site specific and chose a room on the second floor of the new city library to work with. To be able to relax, feel inspired and to concentrate on reading, the visitors of the library need to experience a sense of security. My solution to the different conditions or problems in the room and the needs I identified is a seat hanging inside a frame. When sitting down in the seat, the frame is low enough to see over but it is still experienced as a private spatiality. The visitors can feel protected in their own space and still have an overlook and take part of the surroundings. By hanging belongings on the sides of the frame the visitors can affect the space and nest in their own room. The hanging seat with its flexible angle enables a relaxing movement and enhances the experience of reading. I wanted the seat to feel light and to strengthen the floating expression. I liked the idea of it being made by the same material that holds it up. The room is very exposed to the sun and I took advantage of that by creating a woven seat that forms patterns of shadows. The furniture, which is made of ash wood, rises from a grid system in the floor made by the same material. The grid forms paths between the furniture which slows down the movement in the room and enables a calmer atmosphere.
