La estereotipación de la mujer en Mafalda

Abstract
The main objective of this study is to provide a quantitative analysis of female stereotypes present in the graphic novel Mafalda by Quino. The corpus is extracted from the compilation of comic strips Mafalda Todas las Tiras to which R.W. Connell’s theory of hegemonic masculinity is applied. Furthermore, the different stereotypes mentioned by Bengü Aksu in her article “Barbie Against Superman: Gender Stereotypes and Gender Equity in the Classroom” are applied to provide a detailed quantitative analysis. The three main characters analyzed in this study are Mafalda, Susanita and Libertad and an attempt is done to find three different types of emphasized femininity: compliant, non-compliant and combined femininity. As the results show, all three characters offer three different representations of Connell’s theory of emphasized femininity.
