Abstract

Kirurgi är ett växande område inom hälso- och sjukvården. Komplikationer är vanliga, men går ofta att förebygga. Världshälsoorganisationen (WHO) har utvecklat en checklista för att öka säkerheten inom kirurgi och minska risken för komplikationer. Syfte: Syftet med studien var att undersöka erfarenheten av att arbeta med WHO:s checklista för säkerhet vid operationer hos operationssjuksköterskan. Metod: Data samlades in genom en enkätundersökning vid två sjukhus i Västra Götalandsregionen. Resultat: Närmre 80 procent av operationssjuksköterskorna uppgav att checklistan alltid används vid elektiva operationer, jämfört med drygt 50 procent vid icke elektiva operationer. Majoriteten av respondenterna ansåg att det är allas ansvar att checklistan används. Drygt hälften av operationssjuksköterskorna uppgav att en korrekt ”timeout” och ”avslut” oftast genomfördes. Majoriteten av respondenterna ansåg att checklistan bidrog till en ökad patientsäkerhet, en förbättrad kommunikation och en ökad teamkänsla. Över 80 procent ansåg inte att checklistan fördröjde arbetet på operationssalen. Slutsats: Operationssjuksköterskans erfarenhet av att arbeta med WHO:s checklista för säkerhet vid operationer visar på en god följsamhet. I framtiden behövs fler studier för att undersöka vad andra yrkeskategorier på en operationsavdelning har för erfarenhet av att arbeta med checklistan. Surgery is a growing field in healthcare. Complications are common, but are often preventable. The World Health Organization (WHO) has developed a checklist to increase surgical safety and to decrease the risk of complications. Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the experience of working with the WHO surgical safety checklist among operating room nurses. Method: Data was collected through a survey at two hospitals in Västra Götalandsregionen. Result: Almost 80 percent of the operating room nurses said that the checklist is always used in elective surgeries, compared to just over 50 percent in non-elective surgeries. The majority of the respondents believed that it is everybody’s responsibility to make sure the checklist is being used. More than half of the operating room nurses said that a correct ”timeout” and ”sign-out” was completed most of the times. The majority of the respondents believed that the checklist contributed to a better patient safety, a better communication and an improved teamwork. Over 80 percent didn’t think that the checklist delayed the work in the operating room. Conclusion: The operating room nurses’ experience of working with the WHO surgical safety checklist shows good compliance. In the future, further studies are needed to examine the experience of working with the checklist amongst other teammembers in the operating room.
