Från öppna hjärtan till stängda gränser En studie om den svenska migrationspolitiska diskursen
Abstract
Purpose - This master’s thesis aims to explore and analyze the rhetoric that political actors in
Sweden use in the public discourse regarding migration politics and policies.
Design/methodology/approach – The study uses a qualitative approach with “What’s the
problem represented to be?” (WPR) as an analytical tool. We have gathered the empirical
material from political leaders, both written and spoken communication, aimed at the public.
Findings - The results of this study conclude that the rhetoric in the migration discourse has
changed. It is possible that this change has an impact on politics and policies. The symbolic
nature of politics requires the actors to regard the discourse that they are in but they can also
alter and define the same. In accordance with previous research these changes only occur
when crisis emerge and the current policies and guidelines does not have the tools to resolve
these issues.
Originality/value – This master’s thesis contributes to the field of research by highlighting the
value of political rhetoric in public administration. Spoken communication is the bridge
between politics and the public sector and therefore we can draw the conclusion that it is
necessary to continue this array of research.
