Det som inte får hända får hända

Abstract

With a random approach you can discover new places, new directions and new form; both X-rays and penicillin are a result of this. In everyday life, such randomness could fi nd you meeting old friends in unexpected places. In my exam project I have attempted to make this random element central to the design process. There is a certain fascination in the unusual and unique; products with mistakes tend to have far more character and personality than those that are perfect. I believe we need this imperfect character when living in a world surrounded by mass-production, where over-planning leaves little room for surprise. Industrial production is structured to manufacture mostly predictable products; my exam project is about challenging this and forcing production to become less predictable. In allowing random occurrence at the final point of production, I hope to create unique and unexpected items. The result of my project is a series of individual posters, offset-printed from the same artwork. I had the colour plates interchanged randomly and printed several times on the same paper, allowing what is not supposed to happen to happen.
