TVÅ VÄRLDAR AV MIGRANTARBETE - En studie av migranters arbetsvillkor i restaurangsektorn och IT-sektorn
Abstract
Previous research indicates that there are tendencies towards polarisation in the
positions of migrants in the Swedish labour market. For example, the number of
migrants has increased in both low-paid and high-paid occupations. This research
report compares the employment of migrants in two occupational categories,
namely IT architects, systems analysts, and test managers and Fast-food workers,
food preparation assistants. The first-mentioned category is high-paid in the
labour market, while the latter is low-paid. In the first category, higher education
qualifications are required, while the latter requires little or no formal education.
There are distinct differences in the employment of migrants in the two
occupations. Migrants in the two occupations originate in different countries, they
work in different types of organisations and there are also differences in the type
of employment they hold. The report also analyses the wages of migrants and
whether they correspond to the wages of other categories. The most significant
wage differences are found among the IT-professionals. In particular, Chinese and
Indian migrants seem to be paid lower wages than other comparable workers.
